Tokyo Stock Exchange Closed Today for Marine Day
The Tokyo Stock Exchange is closed today, Monday, July 20, 2026, for Marine Day (Umi no Hi), a national holiday honoring Japan’s maritime economy. Cash equity trading on the TSE, along with the broader JPX group markets, resumes tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21.
Derivatives markets are an exception. Osaka Exchange and Tokyo Commodity Exchange continue to offer holiday trading on instruments like Nikkei 225 futures and Platts Dubai crude oil futures, a practice JPX introduced in 2022 to give investors hedging access during national holidays.
Marine Day falls on the third Monday of July each year. This year’s closure is a routine calendar event rather than a market-driven halt, but it does mean no fresh Nikkei or TOPIX cash-market pricing until Tuesday’s session, leaving overnight futures and options as the primary read on Japanese equity sentiment in the interim.
